Description
The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Septoria callistephi, an ascomycete responsible for significant leaf spot damage. By attacking the foliage, the fungus disrupts the plant's photosynthetic ability, ultimately weakening the host and compromising its development.
The primary host for this pathogen is the China aster (Callistephus chinensis). However, the disease can also occur on various members of the Asteraceae family, making it a persistent concern for both amateur gardeners and commercial floriculture operations.
Symptoms typically begin as small, irregular spots on the leaves, which gradually enlarge and turn dark brown or greyish with lighter centers. As the disease progresses, minute black structures called pycnidia appear within these spots, serving as the source of new fungal spores.
The development of Septoria callistephi is strongly favored by high humidity, prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily disseminated by splashing water, rain, and air currents, allowing the infection to spread rapidly through dense plantings where air circulation is poor.
The severity of the disease is reflected in premature defoliation and stunted growth. Infected asters lose their ornamental value, struggle to produce quality blooms, and, in severe cases, may collapse, leading to significant losses for growers.
To prevent and manage the spread of the infection, consider the following agronomic practices:
- remove and destroy all infected plant debris at the end of the season;
- practice crop rotation to break the fungal life cycle;
- ensure adequate spacing between plants to maximize airflow;
- apply protective or systemic fungicides at the first sign of symptoms;
- avoid overhead irrigation to keep the foliage as dry as possible.
