The fungus Septoria chelidonii is the primary causal agent of leaf spot disease in celandine (Chelidonium majus). As an ascomycete fungus, it acts as an obligate or semi-obligate parasite, specifically targeting the leaves of this medicinal plant, often leading to reduced yield and poor quality of the harvested botanical material.

The host range is primarily limited to plants within the Chelidonium genus. Under favorable conditions, the infection can spread rapidly across a plant population, affecting both wild stands and cultivated plots of celandine, which are often grown for pharmaceutical or horticultural purposes.

The hallmark of the disease is the appearance of distinct lesions on the leaves. These spots often start as small, pale areas that turn brownish with a defined dark margin. As the disease progresses, numerous pycnidia—minute, black fruiting bodies—develop within the dead tissue, serving as the source of inoculum for further disease spread.

Development and spread are highly dependent on weather conditions, specifically high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for moving spores from the pycnidia to healthy foliage. The pathogen overwinters effectively in plant debris, creating a persistent reservoir of infection in the soil.
