Description

The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Septoria chrysanthemella, an ascomycete pathogen responsible for leaf spot infections. This fungus thrives by colonizing the leaf tissue of host plants, where it extracts nutrients, eventually leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence of the foliage.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species and cultivars of chrysanthemums. While it can occur in outdoor garden settings, the disease is particularly prevalent and damaging in nursery conditions or greenhouses, where high plant density and controlled environments facilitate the rapid transmission of fungal spores.

Symptoms typically begin on the lower, older leaves as small, dark brown or black spots. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand and merge, often developing a greyish or tan center with a distinct darker margin. Small, black, pimple-like structures called pycnidia appear within these spots, containing thousands of spores.

The development of Septoria chrysanthemella is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and leaf wetness. Rain splashes, overhead irrigation, and stagnant air are the main vectors for spore dispersal. The fungus overwinters in crop debris, infested soil, and living plant tissues, surviving until the next growing season.

To minimize damage, a multifaceted approach is required. Integrated pest management practices should include the following:

  • Removal and destruction of all infected plant materials to reduce inoculum pressure.
  • Improved airflow through proper spacing of plants.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides to protect healthy tissue.
  • Monitoring plants regularly during damp weather conditions.
