Septoria leaf spot of Elaeagnus is a fungal disease triggered by the pathogen Septoria elaeagni. This fungus specifically targets plants within the Elaeagnus genus, causing localized tissue necrosis on leaves, which leads to premature defoliation and weakened plant vitality during the growing season.
The host range is primarily limited to various species of Elaeagnus (Russian olive, silverberry, etc.). It is a common problem in commercial nurseries and landscape plantings, where dense foliage and poor air circulation often create a microclimate conducive to rapid fungal growth and sporulation.
The characteristic symptoms begin as small, brownish spots on the foliage that eventually expand. As the lesion matures, the center often turns greyish, surrounded by a dark brown or black margin. Small, black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within these spots, serving as the primary source for further spreading of spores via rain splash or wind.
The development of Septoria elaeagni is heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged wet weather during spring and summer accelerates the dispersal of conidia and infection of healthy leaf surfaces. The pathogen overwinters primarily in the leaf litter, meaning that debris management is a critical factor in the disease cycle.
