Description

Brown spot, caused by the fungus Septoria glycines, is a common foliar disease of soybeans. It is widely recognized as one of the most persistent fungal pathogens that can affect soybean production globally, particularly in environments with frequent rainfall and high humidity.

The primary host for this fungus is soybean (Glycine max). The pathogen infects all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and pods, though the most significant damage is typically observed on the leaves during the early to mid-growth stages of the crop.

Initial symptoms appear as small, angular, reddish-brown spots on the leaves, which are typically restricted by leaf veins. As the disease advances, these spots may coalesce into larger irregular patches, causing chlorosis and premature senescence of the foliage. Close inspection often reveals tiny black pycnidia within the lesions.

Optimal conditions for Septoria glycines infection include moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C and periods of leaf wetness. Rain splashing is the primary mechanism for the spread of conidia from lower canopy debris to the lower and middle leaves, facilitating rapid disease progression in dense stands.

The economic impact of brown spot relates to significant leaf area loss, which disrupts photosynthesis and reduces pod fill, leading to decreased seed yield and potential quality degradation. Integrated management strategies include:

  • planting resistant soybean varieties;
  • tillage practices to bury crop residues;
  • crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum;
  • application of fungicides during critical growth stages.
