The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of small, angular to circular spots on the leaves. Initially, these spots are pale brown or grey, often encircled by a darker, necrotic margin. As the disease advances, tiny black pycnidia develop in the centers of these spots, which serve as the reproductive structures for the fungus, allowing it to produce and release spores under humid conditions.

Moisture is the primary driver for disease spread, as rain splashes help disperse the fungal spores from infected debris on the ground to the healthy lower leaves.
