Septoria leaf spot, caused by the fungus Septoria hydrangeae, is a common and destructive foliage disease affecting hydrangea shrubs. This pathogen specifically targets the leaves, where it interferes with photosynthesis and eventually causes severe defoliation, negatively impacting the plant's vigor.
The disease primarily affects various species of the genus Hydrangea. The fungus is known to survive the winter in infected plant debris, including fallen leaves and soil particles, which serves as a primary inoculum source when environmental conditions become suitable for fungal growth in the spring.
The most diagnostic symptom of this disease is the development of irregular or circular spots on the leaf blades. These spots typically appear reddish-brown or gray in color, often surrounded by a dark halo. Over time, tiny black structures called pycnidia appear in the center of these spots, which are characteristic of the Septoria genus.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of an outbreak. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense foliage facilitate the rapid dispersal of fungal spores. The disease thrives in warm, wet weather, spreading effectively via water droplets splashed onto the leaves during irrigation or rain events.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions to prevent the disease from establishing a stronghold. Key control measures include:
