Description

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Septoria malagutii, a pathogen primarily affecting various species within the Solanaceae family, including potato crops. This fungus is known for causing significant foliage damage in specific agricultural regions.

The disease targets leaves, causing characteristic symptoms that include the development of necrotic spots. These spots start as small, circular or irregular lesions with a grayish-brown center and a darker border, which helps in identifying the presence of the pathogen in the field.

A hallmark of the infection caused by Septoria malagutii is the formation of pycnidia. These are microscopic, dark-colored fruiting bodies that appear within the lesions. Inside these structures, the fungus produces masses of conidia, which serve as inoculum for secondary infections throughout the growing season.

Epidemiological spread is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The spores are typically dispersed through splash-dissemination, meaning heavy rain or irrigation can easily move the pathogen from lower to upper leaves.

To minimize damage, integrated pest management strategies should be applied. These include:

  • Removal and destruction of infected plant debris post-harvest;
  • Crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum;
  • Timely application of fungicides targeting the Ascomycota group;
  • Ensuring proper air circulation within the canopy to reduce leaf wetness duration.
