Description
Septoria leaf spot of chamomile is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria matricariae. This disease primarily affects the foliage of chamomile plants, leading to severe chlorosis and necrosis. It is recognized as a significant threat in medicinal plant farming, causing substantial losses in both raw material yield and quality.
The primary host for this fungus is Matricaria chamomilla. As the fungus colonizes the leaf tissue, it disrupts the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively, which in turn leads to stunted growth and reduced production of essential oils, which are the main commercial components of the crop.
Symptoms typically start as small, localized spots on the lower leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often merging, and turning brown or grey with a dark margin. A diagnostic feature of this disease is the presence of pycnidia — tiny, dark fruiting bodies that develop in the center of the necrotic spots, indicating the maturation of fungal spores.
The development and spread of Septoria matricariae are highly dependent on high humidity and rainfall. Fungal spores are disseminated by water splashes and wind, infecting healthy plants in the vicinity. The pathogen survives during the winter in infected plant debris left in the field or in contaminated seeds, serving as the inoculum for the next growing season.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management approach.
