Description
The fungus Septoria obesa Syd. is the primary causal agent of this specific foliar disease in sunflowers. As a fungal pathogen, it specifically targets the leaves, where it colonizes host tissues and initiates the development of necrotic lesions that significantly hinder the plant's metabolic capacity.
This pathogen specifically infects various species within the Helianthus genus, with cultivated sunflowers being the most economically impacted. Because it is highly host-specific, the presence of the pathogen is often tied to continuous sunflower cropping and the proximity of host-related weeds that can harbor the disease.
Symptoms of Septoria obesa infection include the appearance of angular, brown-to-dark-brown spots that are limited by the leaf veins. Over time, these spots develop a necrotic center and a yellowish halo. In conditions of high humidity, pycnidia—small, dark fruiting bodies—develop on the necrotic lesions, which serve as a diagnostic feature.
Disease development and spread are strictly dependent on environmental moisture. These spores are easily spread by rain splashes and wind currents across the field, leading to rapid secondary cycles of infection during the growing season.

This reduction in leaf area index limits the plant's ability to fill seeds, resulting in lower yields and reduced oil content. To mitigate the risks of Septoria obesa, farmers should prioritize:
