Description
The disease known as Septoria leaf spot or white leaf spot is caused by the fungal pathogen Septoria oudemansii (also referred to as Septoria ribis). This pathogen specifically targets the foliage of various berry-producing shrubs, interfering with their metabolic processes.
The primary hosts for this fungus include black currant, red currant, and gooseberry plants. The infection can spread rapidly across a field if environmental conditions remain favorable, potentially causing severe damage to both the harvest and the long-term vigor of the shrubbery.
Early symptoms of the infection appear as small, brownish spots on the leaves. As the fungus matures, the center of these spots turns pale grey or white, surrounded by a distinct dark margin. These white centers are typically dotted with tiny black structures known as pycnidia, which produce spores that disseminate the fungus.
High humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures are the key environmental drivers for the development and transmission of Septoria oudemansii. The fungus overwinters primarily on fallen, infected leaves. In the spring, spores are released and carried by rain splashes or wind onto the new, susceptible leaf growth.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, primarily due to premature leaf drop, which weakens the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis. This defoliation results in reduced fruit yield, poorer berry quality, and increased vulnerability of the plants to winter injury in subsequent seasons.
