Description
Apple septoria leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria pachyspora. This fungus primarily attacks the foliage of apple trees, interfering with normal photosynthetic activity and significantly impacting the tree's overall vigor and productivity.
The primary host for this pathogen is the apple tree (Malus domestica). The disease is widely distributed in regions with specific climatic conditions and can affect various cultivars, making it a persistent challenge for both commercial orchardists and private gardeners worldwide.
The initial symptoms are characterized by small, irregular brown or gray spots that appear on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand in size. A key diagnostic feature is the appearance of tiny black pycnidia (fruiting bodies) within the lesions, which serve as the source of further infection.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly extended periods of leaf wetness and moderate temperatures. The fungus overwinters in infected leaf litter on the orchard floor, and during the spring, spores are spread to new leaves by splashing rain and wind-blown droplets.
