Description
The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Septoria phlogis, a common agent responsible for foliage blight in various ornamental plants, specifically those in the genus Phlox. It is a persistent infection that degrades the health and aesthetic value of these perennial flowers throughout the growing season.
Phlox species, particularly Phlox paniculata, are the primary hosts for this pathogen. The infection typically begins on the lower foliage, where the microclimate is more humid and shaded. As the disease progresses, it moves upward, affecting higher leaves and potentially causing significant defoliation before the end of the summer.
Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or irregular greyish-brown spots surrounded by a dark, purplish-brown border. As the lesions expand, black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop in the center of the spots. Severely affected leaves often curl, turn yellow, and eventually drop from the plant, leaving the stems bare.
The development of the fungus is heavily dependent on moisture. Rainfall, high humidity, and overhead irrigation are the primary drivers of spore dispersal. The pathogen survives in infected debris and soil throughout the winter, producing primary inoculum in the spring that is splashed onto the new growth by rain droplets.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Essential practices include:
- Sanitation: Remove and destroy all plant debris in autumn to reduce the inoculum load.
- Cultural control: Ensure proper spacing between plants to maximize air circulation.
- Watering: Use drip irrigation rather than overhead sprinklers to keep foliage dry.
- Chemical control: Apply fungicides containing copper, mancozeb, or systemic triazoles when environmental conditions favor disease outbreak.
