Description
Pea septoria leaf spot, caused by the fungus Septoria pisi, is a common and economically significant disease affecting pea crops globally. It manifests as a fungal infection that attacks foliage, stems, and pods, potentially leading to yield losses if left uncontrolled.
The disease affects Pisum sativum (field peas). The pathogen survives from one season to the next on infested crop debris left in the field, in the soil, and on contaminated seeds. Spores are dispersed through rain splashes and wind, allowing the fungus to spread across fields during the growing season.
Symptoms typically begin on lower leaves as small, yellow-to-brown spots that gradually expand. As the lesion matures, it develops a dark, necrotic margin and, most characteristically, produces numerous black, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies called pycnidia scattered across the surface of the lesions.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of Septoria pisi. It thrives in humid, cool-to-moderate conditions, with high rainfall and heavy dew providing the necessary moisture for spore germination and infection. High plant density and poor drainage further exacerbate the risk of an outbreak.
Control strategies for pea septoria are focused on integrated pest management (IPM). Key recommendations include using certified disease-free seeds, maintaining a crop rotation of at least 3 years to break the infection cycle, and removing or incorporating crop residue into the soil post-harvest. In high-risk environments, preventive application of fungicides during the early flowering stages is highly recommended to protect the yield.
