Septoria leaf spot of pistachio is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria pistaciae. This pathogen specifically targets the foliage of pistachio trees, leading to premature senescence and leaf abscission. The fungus thrives by overwintering as pycnidia on dead leaf debris, which serves as the primary inoculum source for the following season.
The disease primarily affects Pistacia vera. In commercial orchards, if the pathogen is left unmanaged, it can cause significant stress to the trees, especially those under intensive agricultural management. While pistachio trees are generally robust, the accumulation of Septoria pistaciae inoculum can create recurring cycles of infection that degrade tree vigor over time.
Symptoms typically present as small, irregular, or circular spots on the leaves. Initially appearing as light brown or chlorotic areas, the spots develop darker margins as the tissue becomes necrotic. Under magnification, the center of these spots reveals tiny black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which are diagnostic indicators of the disease presence.
Environmental conditions are critical for the spread of Septoria pistaciae. High humidity, mild temperatures, and frequent rainfall facilitate spore dispersal and infection. The spores are typically spread via splashing rain or wind-blown water droplets, allowing the disease to move rapidly from the lower canopy to the upper parts of the tree during the growing season.

- Application of protective fungicides, including copper-based products or systemic fungicides, during periods of high humidity.

- Monitoring the orchard regularly during spring and early summer for early symptoms to time fungicide applications properly.
The economic impact of Septoria leaf spot is primarily linked to reduced photosynthetic capacity. Extensive leaf drop weakens the tree, prevents the adequate filling of kernels, and reduces overall yield quality. Persistent infections over multiple seasons can severely limit the growth and reproductive capacity of the trees, necessitating a proactive approach to disease control.
