Description
Septoria leaf spot of pear is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Septoria pyricola. This fungus is specifically adapted to infect pear trees and is recognized as a significant constraint in pear production, particularly in regions with frequent rainfall during the growing season.
The primary host for this disease is the pear tree (Pyrus species). It targets the foliage, where it inhibits normal physiological functions. While the infection is predominantly foliar, severe infestations can occasionally lead to the appearance of lesions on fruit, which significantly diminishes the aesthetic and commercial value of the harvest.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of small, circular spots on leaves. Initially brown, the center of these spots eventually turns gray or white, while the border remains dark. A diagnostic feature is the formation of small black structures called pycnidia within the lesions, which house the fungal spores. Premature defoliation is a common consequence of heavy infection.
The development of Septoria pyricola is strongly favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus overwinters primarily in pycnidia located on fallen, infected leaves. During the spring and summer, spores are dispersed through rain splashes and wind, initiating new infection cycles on healthy leaf tissue.
Effective management relies on cultural practices and chemical control. Key strategies include:
- Sanitation: collecting and removing fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering inoculum.
- Pruning: ensuring good air circulation within the canopy to reduce humidity.
- Fungicide applications: using copper-based or systemic fungicides during critical infection periods.
