Description

Rye septoria, caused by the fungus Septoria secalis, is a significant foliar disease affecting rye crops. This fungal pathogen primarily targets leaves and leaf sheaths, causing chlorotic and necrotic lesions that reduce the photosynthetic area of the plant, ultimately impacting grain yield and kernel quality during the growing season.

The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and pycnidia on infected crop residues left on the soil surface or within the upper soil layer. It can also be seed-borne. When environmental conditions become favorable, the pycnidia release conidia, which are splashed by rain or wind-blown onto the lower leaves of the emerging rye plants, initiating the infection cycle.

Early symptoms appear as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves, which gradually expand into irregular, light-brown or grayish blotches surrounded by a yellowish halo. As the infection progresses, distinct dark-colored fruiting bodies, known as pycnidia, develop within the necrotic tissue. These are essential for the microscopic identification of the pathogen.

The disease development is heavily dependent on environmental moisture. Periods of high humidity, frequent rainfalls, and moderate temperatures are ideal for the rapid spread of the fungus. Dense crop canopies and high nitrogen fertilization levels further exacerbate the condition, creating an environment that promotes the rapid colonization of the pathogen throughout the field.

Effective management of rye septoria requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep tillage to bury infected stubble, and the use of resistant rye varieties are fundamental. Additionally, scouting and the strategic application of foliar fungicides during critical stages of development, such as flag leaf emergence, are necessary to minimize losses in high-pressure years.
