Septoria leaf spot is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria steviae. As a specialized fungus, it primarily targets stevia crops, leading to significant physiological stress and reducing the economic value of the produce. Managing this disease is essential for maintaining the quality of commercial stevia production.
The disease exclusively affects Stevia rebaudiana. While it primarily causes damage to the foliage, severe infections can spread to the stems, causing systemic stress. The loss of functional leaf area is the main concern for growers, as the quality and quantity of secondary metabolites, such as steviol glycosides, are significantly reduced.
Early symptoms appear as small, chlorotic spots that eventually turn brown or grayish with a darker necrotic border. Within these lesions, tiny black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop, which act as the source of inoculum for further spread. If left unchecked, the leaves wither, turn yellow, and drop prematurely, leading to reduced photosynthesis.
The lifecycle of Septoria steviae is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air in dense plantings provide an ideal environment for spore dissemination via rain splashes or wind. The fungus overwinters in crop debris left on or in the soil, ready to infect new shoots in the subsequent season.
