Septoria leaf spot of nettle is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria urticae. This fungus primarily infects species of the Urtica genus, leading to the development of necrotic spots on the foliage, which is characteristic of the wider Septoria group of pathogens.
The life cycle of Septoria urticae involves the formation of pycnidia, which are small black fruiting bodies produced within the lesions on the leaves. These pycnidia act as a reservoir for conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum for infection in subsequent growing seasons or secondary infection cycles.
Symptoms initially appear as small spots on the nettle leaves, which gradually enlarge and turn brownish with a distinct dark border. As the disease progresses, the center of the spot becomes necrotic, and the microscopic black pycnidia become clearly visible to the naked eye, distinguishing it from other leaf pathogens.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air in dense plant stands favor the spread of spores. The pathogen requires surface moisture on leaves to initiate the infection process, making rainy seasons particularly high-risk periods.
The impact of this disease includes significant reduction in leaf area available for photosynthesis, which stunts plant growth and reduces overall vitality.
