The fungus colonizes the root systems of various host plants, including major agricultural staples like wheat, barley, and maize. Instead of causing structural damage or necrosis, the colonization enhances the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, effectively acting as a natural growth promoter that behaves similarly to arbuscular mycorrhiza.
