Serpula is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Boletales, infamous for causing severe brown rot in timber structures. In agricultural settings, it specifically targets wooden greenhouse frames, storage sheds, and storage bins, acting as a structural pest that threatens the integrity of essential farm infrastructure.

The primary pathogen, Serpula lacrymans, is a wood-decaying basidiomycete. It operates by secreting enzymes that decompose structural components of wood such as cellulose. This transformation leaves behind a brittle, cracked residue that eventually loses all mechanical strength, potentially collapsing structures that house machinery or crops.

Crops and agricultural products are indirectly affected by the presence of Serpula. While the fungus does not infect living plant tissue directly, it thrives in environments characterized by high humidity and poor ventilation. Such environments are also conducive to the growth of various plant pathogens, complicating the overall phytosanitary management of storage and production facilities.

The characteristic symptoms of a Serpula infection involve the growth of a dense, cotton-like white mycelium that may eventually turn yellowish or reddish-brown. In active stages, the fungus produces large, fleshy fruiting bodies that release moisture, giving it the common name "the weeping fungus." The wood often darkens and exhibits distinct cuboidal cracking patterns.

Development is highly dependent on humidity levels, requiring wood moisture content above 20% and moderate temperatures. Because the fungal hyphae can penetrate through mortar and brickwork, the infection can bridge across non-organic materials to reach new wood sources, making the fungus difficult to eradicate once it is established.

Effective defense and prevention measures involve:

  • Maintaining adequate ventilation to keep humidity levels low within storage areas.
  • Applying chemical wood preservatives or borate-based treatments to timber.
  • Implementing structural isolation to prevent wood from coming into contact with wet soil or masonry.
  • Conducting routine inspections of wooden frames for any signs of mycelium growth or water droplets.
