Description
The Serpulaceae family includes several species of basidiomycete fungi primarily known for causing severe wood decay. While they do not act as typical plant pathogens infecting crops in the field, they are of significant concern to the agricultural industry, as they target the wooden structures of greenhouses, drying facilities, and storage buildings.
The most notorious member, Serpula lacrymans, is the causal agent of true dry rot. This fungus functions by secreting specialized enzymes that digest cellulose within the wooden matrix. The resulting damage is classified as brown rot, characterized by the loss of structural integrity and the darkening of the wood due to the oxidation of lignin components.
Key symptoms include the formation of thick, white, cottony mycelium on surfaces and, in advanced stages, the development of rusty-brown, fleshy fruiting bodies. Affected wood exhibits distinct cuboidal cracking as the internal support structure collapses. The presence of water droplets on the fungal surface often indicates high physiological activity during the decay process.
Development and spread are facilitated by damp, poorly ventilated environments with moderate temperatures. A critical characteristic of these fungi is their ability to transport water from moist areas to drier zones via rhizomorphs—thick cords of mycelium—allowing them to thrive even in parts of structures that appear relatively dry.
Proactive management and protection strategies are essential to prevent catastrophic loss of wooden assets:
- Ensure proper ventilation to maintain wood moisture content below 20%.
- Apply specialized wood preservatives and fungicides during the construction of storage facilities.
- Perform regular inspections for early signs of mycelial growth in hidden joints and corners.
- Maintain structural separation between wood and soil to prevent moisture absorption.
