Setophoma sacchari is a fungal pathogen recognized as the causative agent of a specific leaf spot disease affecting sugarcane. As a member of the diverse group of imperfect fungi, it specializes in colonizing leaf tissues, which significantly impairs the metabolic processes of the host plant.
The primary host for this pathogen is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). The fungus infects the aerial parts of the crop, utilizing both natural openings like stomata and wounds caused by mechanical stress or insect damage to gain entry into the plant tissues, leading to systemic stress.
Disease symptoms manifest as distinct spots on the leaf blades. These lesions typically appear as light brown or straw-colored oval-shaped areas surrounded by a darker, defined margin. Under conditions of high humidity, tiny dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within the necrotic tissue, signaling active sporulation.
The development of Setophoma sacchari is heavily dependent on environmental variables, primarily high humidity and temperatures between 22°C and 28°C. Wind-blown rain and splashing water droplets act as the main vectors, allowing the spores to travel across fields and establish new infection sites on healthy foliage.
