Seuratia is a fungal pathogen that causes specific bark and woody tissue diseases in various perennial plant species. This disease is categorized as a mycosis, primarily affecting trees within the Rosaceae family. The pathogen is known for its ability to persist in dead bark tissues and woody debris, allowing it to remain in the orchard environment throughout the year if sanitary measures are ignored.
The disease targets various fruit-bearing species such as apples, pears, cherries, and plums. It frequently enters the plant through wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by pruning or insect activity. Once established, the fungus colonizes the inner bark and cambium, gradually disrupting the transport of nutrients and water, which leads to the weakening of the tree's vascular system.
Clinical symptoms of Seuratia infection include the development of darkened, sunken lesions on the branches or main trunk. Over time, these areas may develop into distinct necrotic ulcers. In many cases, the bark starts to crack, and trees may exhibit signs of gumming (gummosis) as they attempt to isolate the infection. These symptoms are often more visible during active growth periods when the contrast between healthy and necrotic tissue becomes apparent.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and prolonged rainfall, which facilitate spore dispersal. Poor orchard management, such as failure to prune dead branches or neglecting tree health after mechanical damage, significantly increases the spread of the fungus. The pathogen effectively survives the dormant winter season in the form of mycelium embedded in the bark.
Effective management strategies include:
- Rigorous sanitary pruning to remove all infected limbs and branches.
- Proper tool disinfection between trees to prevent cross-contamination.
- Sealing large pruning wounds with horticultural wound dressing.
- Applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season to suppress spore germination.
- Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and proper pest control to reduce entry points for the fungus.
