While often associated with the natural senescence process, in horticulture, it frequently indicates a severe physiological disturbance or the presence of a pathogenic infection that impairs the plant's vascular system, preventing the effective transport of water and nutrients.

The etiology involves both biological agents and environmental stressors. Pathogens such as Fusarium or Rhizoctonia are common culprits, as they infiltrate the roots and stems, causing vascular wilting. However, non-infectious causes are equally prevalent, including severe dehydration, high salinity in the growing medium, temperature extremes, or damage to root systems caused by pests, preventing the plant from maintaining its necessary water potential.

Various species are susceptible to this disorder, with epiphytic plants like Cattleya being prime examples. For these orchids, shriveling is a diagnostic sign that the plant is consuming its stored water reserves in pseudobulbs. Symptoms typically manifest as the wrinkling of leaves and stems, loss of structural rigidity, and eventual necrotic lesions if the underlying cause is not addressed promptly.

Maintaining a stable environment with appropriate humidity, ensuring high-quality, well-draining media, and preventing root damage are essential. If an infection is suspected, the application of targeted fungicides and the removal of necrotic tissue are necessary to salvage the specimen. Monitoring the health of the root system is the most effective way to prevent the onset of irreversible senescence.
