Simplicillium infection refers to a range of fungal plant diseases caused by species within the Simplicillium genus. These fungi are known for their complex biological nature, functioning both as entomopathogens and as pathogens that can infiltrate plant tissues, leading to significant physiological damage and agricultural yield loss.
This pathogen affects a wide variety of plant hosts, including greenhouse-grown vegetables, ornamental plants, and berry crops. The fungus acts by colonizing the plant's vascular or surface tissues, utilizing nutrient resources intended for the plant's growth and development. This process often leaves the plant susceptible to secondary infections or total physiological collapse.
The visual symptoms of the disease typically include chlorosis followed by tissue necrosis. Small, discolored spots appear on the leaves, which gradually expand and merge, forming larger dead zones. Under humid conditions, the characteristic white to yellowish fungal mycelium may become visible on the surface of the affected plant parts, signaling active sporulation.
The spread of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly relative humidity and temperature. Optimal conditions for infection involve high humidity (often above 80%) and stable, mild temperatures. The spores are primarily disseminated through splashing water during irrigation, air currents, and the mechanical handling of infected plant material by workers or tools.
Managing the disease requires a rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize losses:
- Maintaining optimal greenhouse ventilation to prevent stagnant moisture.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
- Avoiding excessive overhead irrigation that promotes spore transfer.
- Application of approved chemical or biological fungicides at the earliest detection of symptoms.
