This pathogen primarily targets vegetable and ornamental crops, often exploiting weakened plants or wounds caused by insect feeding. It is frequently associated with "sooty mold" types of colonization, where the fungus thrives on the honeydew secreted by pests like aphids or whiteflies, subsequently invading the leaf surface and causing physiological stress to the host.
