Description
The Sinaloa tomato leaf curl virus (STLCV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. As a single-stranded DNA virus, it poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity in regions where its insect vectors thrive.
The virus primarily targets solanaceous crops. Tomatoes are the primary host, but the disease frequently spreads to sweet peppers, causing substantial economic impact. The pathogen's ability to persist in wild weed reservoirs ensures its presence throughout the growing season, making it difficult to eradicate completely.
Symptoms of the infection are characterized by severe upward leaf curling, crinkling, and significant chlorosis. Plants infected at an early growth stage exhibit severe stunting, reduced internode length, and a dramatic reduction in fruit set. Any fruit that does manage to develop is often stunted, discolored, or malformed.
The primary vector for the transmission of STLCV is the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the insect through feeding and remains persistent within the vector for its entire lifespan. Outbreaks are most common in warm climates where the high temperatures accelerate the life cycle of the whitefly population.
Management and prevention focus heavily on vector control. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential, including the use of reflective mulches to deter whiteflies, timely application of insecticides, and the use of insect-proof screens in greenhouse environments. Furthermore, growers should prioritize the removal of symptomatic plants to reduce the viral inoculum in the field.
