Sirococcus castaneae blight is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Sirococcus castaneae. This fungus belongs to the Ascomycota division and specifically targets woody species, inducing necrosis in the bark and cambium layers. The disease progressively weakens the tree, leading to decline and, in severe cases, death if not managed correctly.
The primary host for this fungus is the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), although other related species within the Fagaceae family can also be susceptible under specific environmental conditions. Infection typically starts on young shoots and branches before progressing toward the main stem, making early detection a significant challenge for growers.
Symptoms are characterized by the development of depressed, necrotic lesions on the bark, which eventually turn brown or dark brown. The bark often cracks in the affected areas, exposing the underlying wood. A key diagnostic sign is the presence of tiny, black fruiting bodies (pycnidia) of the fungus that appear on the dead bark surface during periods of high humidity.
The development and spread of Sirococcus castaneae are heavily influenced by weather conditions. The fungus thrives in humid environments with moderate temperatures, allowing spores to be dispersed via raindrops, wind, or insect vectors. Vulnerable areas such as frost cracks or mechanical wounds serve as primary entry points for the pathogen to colonize the tree.
The impact of this disease is substantial, as it disrupts the tree's vascular system, impeding the flow of water and nutrients. Infected branches eventually wither and die back. If the infection reaches the trunk, the tree loses its structural integrity and reproductive capacity, leading to reduced nut yields and overall forest decline.
Protective measures involve a combination of silvicultural and chemical practices:
- Executing sanitary pruning of infected branches, ensuring cuts are made well into healthy wood.
- Disinfecting pruning tools between cuts to prevent cross-contamination of spores.
- Applying protective antiseptic pastes or wound dressings to pruning sites.
