Host range and susceptibility
The primary host for this fungus is the Norway spruce, although other spruce species are also susceptible to infection. The disease is most devastating to seedlings and saplings within forest nurseries. Because these environments often maintain high-density plantings, they provide an ideal setting for the pathogen to establish and spread rapidly among susceptible host plants.
Symptoms and signs of infection
Initial symptoms appear as the wilting and curling of current-year shoots, often referred to as "crooking." As the disease progresses, the needles on affected shoots turn chlorotic, then brown, and eventually drop off. On the necrotic tissue, the pathogen produces small, black, fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which are visible to the naked eye under moist conditions.
Environmental conditions for development
The development and spread of Sirococcus piceicola are heavily dependent on cool, moist, and rainy weather. Rain splashes are the primary mechanism for dispersing fungal spores from infected parts of the tree to healthy needles and shoots. Foggy and humid conditions exacerbate the situation, as they keep the foliage wet for extended periods, favoring spore germination.
