The most notable representative, Sistotrema brinkmannii, is often associated with wood decay and root rot, representing a challenge in both agricultural and forest settings.

The pathogen is a basidiomycete that thrives by breaking down organic matter. The disease type is primarily characterized by tissue decay, often manifesting as root rot that compromises the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, ultimately leading to significant wilting and death if left untreated.

Susceptible crops include fruit trees, nursery stock, and various greenhouse vegetables. The fungus typically enters through wounds in the root system or bark, colonizing tissues quickly when the plant's natural defenses are lowered by environmental stress or poor cultivation practices.
