Skeletocutis is a genus of fungi belonging to the Polyporaceae family, recognized primarily as a cause of white rot in woody plants. These fungi are saprotrophic or weakly parasitic, meaning they break down complex polymers such as lignin and cellulose. As a result, they significantly degrade the structural integrity of the wood, causing substantial economic loss in forestry and timber management.

The host range for Skeletocutis includes various coniferous and deciduous tree species. The fungi often colonize weakened trees, deadwood, and old stumps. In managed ecosystems or orchards, these pathogens target individuals that have sustained environmental or mechanical damage, utilizing these wounds as entry points to colonize the inner sapwood and heartwood.

Visible symptoms of infection typically include the development of basidiocarps (fruiting bodies) on the surface of the bark or dead wood. Internally, the wood undergoes a transformation characterized by a bleached appearance, fibrous texture, and significant softening. This degradation weakens the mechanical support of the tree, frequently leading to premature breakage and windthrow.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for the development and dispersal of these fungi. Spores are primarily spread via wind and can travel over significant distances. Once they land on a susceptible substrate, particularly during prolonged periods of damp weather, the spores germinate and initiate the colonization process of the host tissue.

Effective management strategies rely on rigorous silvicultural practices focused on sanitation. Removing infected wood, clearing fallen logs, and extracting stumps are critical to reducing the inoculum pressure in the area. Additionally, protecting trees from physical injury and applying wound sealants in horticultural settings can significantly limit the success of fungal invasion.
