Skeletocutis amorpha is a wood-decay fungus belonging to the Polyporaceae family. It is recognized as an agent of brown rot, which is a type of decay that primarily targets cellulose within the woody tissues of trees, leaving the lignin behind and causing the wood to become brittle and cubical in structure.
The fungus predominantly colonizes coniferous tree species, with a particular affinity for pines (Pinus), spruces (Picea), and firs (Abies). It is frequently found on dead logs, stumps, and fallen branches, acting as a crucial component in forest nutrient cycling, though it can become problematic when attacking high-value timber.
Diagnostic signs include the presence of distinct fruiting bodies on the host surface. These are often resupinate or effused-reflexed, typically displaying vibrant orange to reddish-brown coloration with a characteristic white margin. Internally, the infected wood exhibits profound structural degradation, shifting to a dark brown, crumbly state that indicates advanced decay.
