Skeletonema costatum is a species of marine diatom that acts as a significant biological stressor in aquatic agricultural systems. While it is not a traditional plant pathogen, its rapid proliferation creates conditions that negatively affect the health and yield of crops grown in hydroponic or aquaponic environments.
The organism functions by forming long, chain-like colonies that rapidly consume essential nutrients intended for crop production. This competition leads to nutrient deficiencies in target plants, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced quality of harvested produce.
Early signs of infestation include the presence of brownish foam on the water surface and increased turbidity in the nutrient solution. As the population peaks, the water may appear dark yellow or brown, and the roots of the plants may begin to show signs of browning and localized rot due to oxygen depletion.
Environmental conditions that favor Skeletonema costatum include high concentrations of nitrates and phosphates, coupled with sufficient light exposure and warm temperatures. In stagnant water, these organisms can quickly dominate the microbial ecosystem of the growing system, making eradication difficult once established.
