Description

Skeletonematosis is a fungal disease caused by organisms belonging to the Skeletonemataceae family. While the nomenclature is often linked to aquatic biology, in a phytopathological context, it refers to specific pathogens that invade the vascular bundles of crops. This disease significantly restricts the transport of water and nutrients, eventually leading to the systemic decline of the host plant.

Various vegetable and cereal crops are vulnerable to this pathogen, particularly when grown under suboptimal conditions. The fungus typically enters the plant through the root system or small mechanical injuries. Once inside, it proliferates within the xylem and phloem, creating a biological blockage that severely impacts the plant's overall physiology and development.

Symptoms often manifest as premature yellowing and necrosis of the foliage, followed by chronic wilting even when soil moisture levels are adequate. A cross-section of the plant's stem usually reveals internal vascular discoloration or dark necrotic streaks. As the disease progresses, the plant exhibits stunted growth, reduced yield, and, in severe cases, total death of the crop.

The development and spread of skeletonematosis are highly dependent on environmental factors, primarily high soil moisture and stagnant air conditions. The pathogen can persist in soil and crop residue, making it highly resilient. Transmission occurs through contaminated irrigation water, dirty farming tools, or wind dispersal of spores when environmental conditions are favorable for fungal growth.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that focuses on crop rotation and the maintenance of soil drainage to prevent waterlogging. Prevention strategies include using disease-resistant cultivars and ensuring strict hygiene in the field. Should the disease appear, systemic fungicides are required to eliminate the infection within the plant's tissues, accompanied by the removal and disposal of all affected plant materials.
