Solenopsora is a genus of lichens that often colonizes the bark of trees and shrubs. While these organisms are not pathogens that derive nutrients from the host plant, their presence is often an indicator of tree decline or poor environmental conditions such as high humidity and lack of air circulation within the canopy.
Biologically, these lichens consist of a fungal component (mycobiont) and an algal or cyanobacterial partner (photobiont). They are epiphytes, meaning they use the tree surface exclusively for structural support. However, extensive colonization can hinder the tree's natural bark expansion and create an environment that encourages moisture retention, which may lead to secondary fungal infections.
Solenopsora is typically found on mature fruit trees, particularly those with rough, fissured bark. Orchards that lack regular maintenance, proper pruning, or adequate sunlight are the most susceptible to widespread lichen colonization. These organisms thrive in stable, humid environments where the bark remains moist for prolonged periods.
The primary symptoms are the appearance of crustose or squamulose patches on the trunk and main branches. These growths vary in texture and color but are generally easily distinguished from true fungal diseases like cankers. While they do not directly kill the plant, they can harbor pests and conceal other underlying health issues of the bark.
Management strategies focus on promoting tree vigor and physical sanitation. Regular pruning to increase sunlight penetration and air movement is essential to reduce the humidity levels that these lichens require. Additionally, scrubbing the bark or applying lime washes during the dormant season are standard practices to remove unwanted growths and protect the tree bark from excessive moisture accumulation.
