Description

Solorina is a genus of lichens belonging to the Peltigeraceae family. It is important to distinguish that Solorina is not a plant disease or a pathogen. Instead, it is a complex lichenized fungus that plays a vital role in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in arctic, alpine, and cool temperate regions.

Biologically, Solorina consists of a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner, such as a cyanobacterium. Unlike crop diseases, these organisms derive their nutrients from the atmosphere and the substrate, and they do not infect or harm agricultural or horticultural plants.

The characteristic features of Solorina include a foliose thallus with a brownish color. A unique diagnostic trait is the presence of large, disc-like apothecia that appear sunken directly into the thallus surface, which distinguishes it from many other genera of lichens found in similar habitats.
