The fungus reproduces via perithecia, which are small, flask-shaped black fruiting bodies that release ascospores. These spores are highly resistant to environmental stress and can persist in the soil for long periods. The lifecycle is completed rapidly when moisture levels are high, making it a common contaminant in agricultural environments where organic waste is present.
This fungus primarily affects seeds and seedlings, especially in vegetable and cereal crops. It often colonizes germination chambers or greenhouses where humidity is poorly managed. By utilizing nutrients from plant debris, it can establish a foothold in the soil profile and attack germinating roots or tender plant parts, leading to pre-emergence or post-emergence damping-off symptoms.
