Description
Sordariosis is a fungal plant disease associated with the Sordariaceae family. These fungi are typically known as decomposers of organic matter; however, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens, causing significant damage to agricultural plants when environmental conditions facilitate their rapid proliferation and aggressive colonization of host tissues.
The causative agents are ascomycete fungi that produce perithecia within the host tissue. These fungi thrive by utilizing the nutrients of the host plant, often leading to rapid tissue degradation and decay. Their life cycle is highly dependent on humidity and the presence of accessible organic substrate.
A wide range of crops can be affected, including cereals, vegetables, and stored fruits. The disease is particularly damaging in greenhouse environments and storage facilities where restricted airflow and high humidity create ideal conditions for the rapid spread of fungal spores and subsequent infection of healthy plant tissues.
Primary symptoms include the formation of dark, spreading lesions, tissue softening, and eventually the appearance of characteristic small black spots, which represent the fruiting bodies of the fungus. On seeds, the disease often manifests as mold, leading to poor germination rates and stunted seedling growth.
