The order Sordariales consists of a diverse group of fungi, ranging from decomposers to significant plant pathogens. These organisms, belonging to the class Sordariomycetes, produce perithecia which are specialized fruiting structures. In agronomy, certain members of this order are recognized as causal agents of various plant disorders that threaten crop stability and quality.
Crops most susceptible to Sordariales infections include various cereals, oilseeds, and horticultural plants. The pathogens primarily target the root zone and stem tissue, interfering with the vascular system's ability to transport nutrients and water. This systemic interference often leads to the weakening of the entire plant structure.
Visible symptoms of Sordariales infection frequently include leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, stem necrosis, and basal rot. In many instances, the affected plants show wilting symptoms even when soil moisture is adequate. Laboratory diagnosis is often required to distinguish these infections from other common fungal pathogens that cause similar external damage.

High-density planting without proper aeration significantly increases the likelihood of an outbreak.

Effective protection involves a comprehensive approach: rotating crops, ensuring the use of disease-free seeds, and applying appropriate fungicides during critical growth stages. Soil management, such as pH balancing and proper incorporation of harvest residues, is also essential for prevention.
