Sorochytrium is a genus of chytrid fungi that acts as a plant pathogen. These microorganisms are known to infect the root systems of various plants, primarily affecting crops that are sensitive to high soil moisture levels. Being obligate parasites, they rely on living plant tissue to complete their biological cycle.

The primary pathogen species within this genus is Sorochytrium milgare. Its biology is centered on the production of motile zoospores that require water films in the soil to navigate and reach the roots of susceptible host plants. Once contact is established, the fungus penetrates the epidermal cells to extract nutrients.

The host range is predominantly focused on cereal crops, especially millet. The disease is classified as a root-infecting pathogen, which makes it particularly challenging to detect in the early stages, as the damage occurs underground. It is most prevalent in areas with heavy or waterlogged soil structures.

Symptoms of Sorochytrium infection are characterized by stunted plant growth, chlorosis of the lower leaves, and poor root development. Infected roots often exhibit distinctive gall-like swellings or necrotic lesions. This internal disruption prevents the plant from absorbing sufficient water and nutrients, leading to poor yield and potential plant death.

Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle and improving soil conditions. Effective measures include:

  • Improving soil drainage systems to prevent water accumulation.
