Description

Southern corn leaf blight is a devastating fungal disease caused by the pathogen Bipolaris maydis (previously known as Helminthosporium maydis). This foliar disease can cause significant economic losses by reducing photosynthetic capacity and overall plant vigor, which directly impacts grain yield.

The primary host for this pathogen is corn (maize). While the disease primarily impacts the foliage, it can also infect leaf sheaths, stalks, husks, and the kernels under severe conditions, representing a serious threat to corn production worldwide.

Symptoms appear as small, tan to light brown, rectangular-shaped lesions that develop between the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand, sometimes coalescing to cover large areas of the leaf surface. In humid conditions, a characteristic velvety olive-green to black fungal growth appears on the lesions, consisting of conidiophores and conidia.

The development of the disease is favored by warm temperatures (ranging from 20°C to 30°C) and high humidity or frequent rainfall. The pathogen survives between growing seasons in infected corn debris, which serves as a primary inoculum source for the following season's crop when conditions become favorable.

Effective management strategies include the selection of resistant corn hybrids, which is the most reliable method of control. Additionally, crop rotation, deep plowing to bury infected residues, and the application of foliar fungicides are essential practices to minimize the impact of the disease and prevent significant yield reductions.
