Description

Soybean vein necrosis (SVN) is a viral disease caused by the Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV), which is classified under the genus Tospovirus. This pathogen is transmitted to healthy plants primarily through the feeding activities of thrips, which act as the main vectors for the virus.

The disease exclusively affects soybean plants. Once the plant is infected, the virus spreads systemically throughout the vascular tissues, negatively impacting the plant's metabolic processes and drastically reducing seed yield and overall crop health.

The early symptoms of the disease appear as vein clearing and yellowing along the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these areas develop reddish-brown or necrotic patches. In severe infections, these patches expand to cause leaf tissue death, leading to chlorosis and early senescence.

The prevalence of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of the thrips population. High temperatures and nearby weed habitats often serve as hotbeds for the virus, allowing it to move from peripheral vegetation into the soybean fields during the growing season.

Since there are no curative measures once a plant is infected, disease management focuses on prevention and vector control.
