Description
The Sparassidaceae family comprises several species of fungi known in forest pathology as significant pathogens affecting the root systems of coniferous trees. These fungi act as wood-decay agents, primarily inducing a destructive brown rot that compromises the structural integrity of the host tree from the base upward.
The primary pathogen within this group is Sparassis crispa. It functions as a root parasite, targeting various conifer species such as pines, spruces, and larches. The fungus enters the tree through fine root injuries or root grafts, gradually colonizing the root collar and lower stem, where it breaks down cellulose and hemicellulose.
Visible symptoms typically include the development of large, cauliflower-like fruiting bodies at the base of infected trees. Internally, the wood undergoes advanced decay, becoming friable and showing characteristic brown cracking patterns across the annual growth rings. Externally, the crown shows signs of stress, such as needle chlorosis, reduced annual growth, and eventual dieback.
The development and spread of the disease are favored by humid conditions and the presence of infested stump material in the soil, which serves as a long-term reservoir for the fungus. The pathogen spreads underground via direct contact between healthy and infected roots, making it particularly difficult to manage once it has established itself within a plantation or stand.
Economic damage is severe, as the infection often leads to windthrow, making trees highly unstable. Effective control and prevention strategies focus on integrated forest management:
- timely extraction of infected trees;
- stump removal to eliminate inoculum sources;
- maintaining stand diversity to reduce the rate of root-to-root transmission;
- conducting regular surveys to detect early fruiting bodies.
