Spathulosporosis is a specific infectious disease caused by ascomycete fungi from the genus Spathulospora. These pathogens belong to the group of marine fungi specialized in parasitizing the thalli of various red algae species (Rhodophyta). Unlike terrestrial pathogens, this fungus leads a strictly aquatic lifestyle, adapted to high salinity levels and the specific conditions of the marine environment.

The disease agent primarily affects marine algae, which can be used in aquaculture for agar production or as a food source for marine organisms. The infection penetrates host tissues, forming characteristic spore-bearing structures known as spatulas, from which the genus name is derived. This process disrupts the metabolic functions within the algal host.

Key symptoms of the infection include the appearance of localized bleached spots, changes in thallus pigmentation, and deformation of the fronds. In areas of active fungal sporulation, the algae tissue gradually deteriorates, leading to necrosis and premature death of individual segments or the entire colony during widespread infection outbreaks.

The development and spread of Spathulospora are directly dependent on hydrological factors such as water temperature, light levels, and the concentration of nutrients in the marine environment. Optimal conditions for spore germination occur when algal population density is high, facilitating the rapid transmission of the pathogen between plants in commercial aquatic farms.

The harmfulness of this disease lies in the significant reduction of algal biomass and the loss of commercial product quality. To prevent the spread of infection in industrial cultivation, it is recommended to conduct regular monitoring of plantation health, remove infected specimens, and maintain strict water quality control to minimize factors that trigger disease outbreaks.
