Spathulosporaceae is a distinct family of Ascomycete fungi known for their specialized parasitic relationship with marine plants, predominantly red algae. These fungi have evolved to survive in saline environments, utilizing the tissues of their hosts for nutrient acquisition, which categorizes them as specialized marine pathogens.
The causative agents belong to the order Spathulosporales. The type of disease involves the degradation of host cellular structures, leading to compromised biological functions. By penetrating the thallus, these fungi cause systemic stress within the host organism, inhibiting photosynthetic efficiency and overall biomass accumulation.
