Description
Spermospora leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by species within the Spermospora genus. This pathogen primarily impacts cereal crops such as barley, wheat, and rye, leading to visible leaf necrosis and potential yield losses if the infection pressure is high during the critical growth stages of the plants.
The fungal agent is known to overwinter on infected crop residues left in the field and within contaminated seed batches. As the season progresses, primary infection typically starts from these sources, and the disease rapidly transitions into a secondary infection cycle, spreading through conidia produced on the necrotic lesions of the leaves.
The main symptoms are characterized by small, elongated, or oval-shaped spots that appear on the leaves. These lesions often exhibit a light center with darker margins. As the infection progresses, individual spots may coalesce to cover large areas of the foliage, impairing the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently and leading to premature senescence.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Periods of rainfall or prolonged leaf wetness provide the ideal environment for the fungus to sporulate and penetrate host tissue. Dense crop canopies that retain moisture are particularly susceptible to rapid disease outbreaks.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize the inoculum levels. Recommended practices include the rotation of crops to break the disease cycle, deep tillage to bury infected stubble, and the use of certified, treated seeds. During the growing season, systemic fungicide applications are the most effective method to protect the flag leaf and ensure optimal grain filling.
