The pathogen Spermospora zeae is a fungus known to cause leaf spot disease in corn crops. It belongs to the group of foliar pathogens that can impact plant health during favorable environmental conditions. Although it is not always classified as a major epidemic threat, it contributes to overall yield loss by reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
The primary host for this fungus is maize (Zea mays). While it mainly infects the foliage, under conducive conditions, it can spread across the entire canopy. The fungus colonizes leaf tissues, interfering with normal plant metabolism and potentially accelerating the aging of the leaves, which is detrimental to late-season development.
