Sphacelotheca is a genus of smut fungi known for causing various types of smut diseases in cereal crops. These fungi are obligate parasites that infect plants, primarily targeting the inflorescences of grasses like sorghum, maize, and pearl millet. By replacing healthy tissues with their own spore masses, they significantly impact agricultural productivity.

The primary hosts for Sphacelotheca species are members of the Poaceae family. The fungus invades the host plant during its seedling stage, growing systemically within the plant tissue without showing visible symptoms until the flowering phase. During the reproductive stage, the fungus converts the developing seeds or the entire floral structure into a mass of teliospores.

Symptoms become clearly visible during the heading stage when the smut sori replace the healthy grains. These sori appear as dark, powdery masses often covered by a thin membrane that ruptures to release spores into the environment. The presence of these fungal structures not only reduces yield but also contaminates the surrounding crop with spores, facilitating further infection.

The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly soil moisture and temperature during seed germination. The fungal spores can survive in the soil for extended periods or adhere to the surface of seeds. Once the conditions are right, the spores germinate and penetrate the germinating seedling, establishing a systemic infection that follows the host's development.
