Millet stem smut, caused by the fungus Sphacelotheca macrospora, is a significant disease affecting millet crops worldwide. As a systemic pathogen, it invades the vascular tissues of the plant shortly after germination. Unlike other types of smut that target only the floral structures, this pathogen causes structural damage to the stems and foliage.

The primary host for this fungus is proso millet. Upon infection, the mycelium of the fungus colonizes the host tissue systematically. As the plant grows, the fungus interferes with normal development, leading to metabolic disruptions that negatively impact grain filling and overall crop yield, often causing severe economic losses for farmers.

Typical symptoms include the development of elongated galls or sori along the stems, leaf sheaths, and sometimes the inflorescences. These galls contain a mass of dark, powdery teliospores. Infected plants typically exhibit dwarfism, excessive tillering, and twisted stems. In many cases, the panicles fail to develop properly, becoming deformed or completely covered by the spore mass.

The spread of Sphacelotheca macrospora is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Cool and moist soil conditions during the initial stages of seed germination are ideal for infection. Spores can persist in the soil for several seasons or remain viable on the surface of seeds, acting as the primary inoculum for the next crop cycle. Mechanical harvesting can further disseminate spores across a field.

Effective control strategies focus on integrated pest management. The most critical step is the application of systemic fungicides as seed treatments, which effectively eliminate spores attached to the seeds. Additionally, agronomic practices such as crop rotation, deep plowing to bury infected crop residues, and the selection of resistant cultivars are essential to minimize disease prevalence.
